Release time:2017-06-07
According to a June 2 report by Pakistan's The Express Tribune, official data from Pakistan's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources reveal that the country produces 3.5 million tons of coal annually. Yet, to meet the demands of its national steel, cement, and power industries, Pakistan still relies on importing approximately 4 to 5 million tons of coal each year. The primary sources of these imports include Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, South Africa, and the United States. Officials also noted that Pakistan has so far identified 19 coalfields across the nation. Meanwhile, geologists’ research indicates that the country holds vast coal reserves—estimated at around 186 billion tons—which could provide an abundant and cost-effective fuel source for the nation’s electricity generation.
