On December 26, 2022, the world’s first 200,000-ton/year coke oven gas-to-anhydrous ethanol project, constructed by Henan Liyuan Group, commenced production with a successful startup, and yielding 99.8% pure anhydrous ethanol.
The project employs DMTE (dimethyl ether carbonylation and hydrogenation to ethanol) technology developed by Yanchang Zhongke, utilizing coke oven gas from Henan Liyuan’s 1.28-million-ton/year coking facility as feedstock. As a global industrial demonstration project, it features a spiral tube heat exchanger designed and manufactured by Wuhan EPHE as a key component in the feed/effluent heat exchange system.
During technology development, Wuhan EPHE provided a series of shell-and-tube and spiral tube heat exchangers and reactor prototypes, validating the efficiency and cost-saving advantages of spiral wound designs. This project marks the first large-scale industrial application of spiral tube heat exchangers in coke gas-to-ethanol production.
Guided by China’s “carbon neutrality and peak carbon” strategy, Wuhan EPHE continues to innovate in high-efficiency heat exchangers and reactors. These products were listed in the MIIT’s National Energy-Saving Technology and Equipment Catalog in 2021 and 2022, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering energy-efficient solutions for the chemical and energy sectors.
